Santa Monica Boulevard is also known as West Hollywood’s 1.9 mile stretch of Historic Route 66. This thoroughfare from Crescent Heights to La Brea is an eclectic mix of businesses.

Anchored at La Brea by the West Hollywood Gateway, Mid City/Eastside is an up and coming area of West Hollywood - young and hip amidst a rich culture of Russian heritage and remains a mix of old and new.  There is clear evidence of transformation underway and the east end is exploding with new development with two new mixed use projects featuring residential units, ground floor retail and subterranean parking, creating “contemporary ‘green’ urban villages” for luxurious living.

Santa Monica Boulevard is a reflection of its residents and their values. Along the Boulevard, bronze plaques, part of the West Hollywood Memorial Walk, are engraved with the names of those who have died from HIV/AIDS. A monument commemorating the site of a massive protest against the 1991 gubernatorial veto of a bill that would have banned job discrimination against homosexuals. Signs in Russian denote businesses and restaurants that cater to immigrants from the former Soviet Union, who make up nearly 20 percent of the city’s population.

Adding to parks and recreation activities and locales in West Hollywood are the expansive lawns of Plummer Park where community gathering take place, a nice walk with your dog or a good game of chess.  The park has classroom facilities and community meeting space as well as an old theater from the 1930’s names Fiesta Hall.  The Great Hall at Plummer Park was recently designated as an historic landmark.

The Eastside Community Plan is a collaborative effort between the Eastside Working Group, the City of West Hollywood, and the community. The Eastside Community Plan will seek to catalog and prioritize the needs of the Eastside neighborhood, develop implementation strategies, and make recommendations to City Council regarding implementation of the Plan.

On their website, you can learn more about the West Hollywood Eastside Community Plan and the Eastside Working Group, check their blog posts for the latest project news and events, link to theirdocument archive, or share ideas with your Eastside neighbors.

What do you want to see on the Eastside?
As part of the Eastside Community Plan process, the City of West Hollywood is partnering with Neighborland to gather your ideas for how to make the Eastside neighborhood even better.  Neighborland is a website where you can share your ideas and insights, support your neighbors’ ideas, and connect with people who share your interests.

Starting August 1, please visit www.neighborland.com/wehoeastside to submit your ideas, and see what your neighbors are saying.  You can also share ideas with Twitter or SMS: Tweet “I want ______ #WeHoEastside” or text “I want _____” to (323) 736-4555.  Your suggestions will be used to inform development of the Eastside Community Plan, a collaborative effort of the City of West Hollywood and the Eastside Working Group.
